Material

These dolls are dressed in Madras fabric or banana leaf which represent the diverse and rich culture of Dominica, the Nature Island of the Caribbean. The Madras material is the colorful fabric that wraps the skirt of each doll. Each doll is dressed beautifully in Dominica attire.  These dolls are wearing traditional costumes of Dominica, the National Dress of Dominica, the jip, or Jupe.

The Jip is the second type of wear that makes up the National Wear for the women in Dominica. It is a less formal national wear but it can also be used for special occasions. The Jip comprises a white peasant blouse (Chimiz Blan) with or without frills, a colored scarf or foula, and a colorful skirt worn over a white petticoat with lace. The skirt can be made out of a bright and colorful fabric with flowers or a printed design. It could also be made out of madras or plain shiny material. The white petticoat has rows of lace which are usually trimmed with red ribbon. The Jip petticoat has an elastic waist.

Whether you choose Mary or Dominique, each doll is distinctly Dominica and would be a wonderful addition to your home and family! What a beauty!
